Things to Do in Palm Cove with Kids (Family Guide)

Palm Cove is one of Queensland’s most family-friendly beach destinations. The calm esplanade, stinger-protected beach, excellent resort pools, and proximity to world-class attractions make it a genuinely easy holiday with children of all ages.

On the Beach

The Palm Cove beach has a stinger net enclosure maintained from October through May — the months when box jellyfish and Irukandji are present in tropical Queensland waters. Inside the net, kids can swim freely. Outside stinger season (June–September), the entire beach is safe without a wetsuit. The water is calm, shallow near the shore, and the beach is never overcrowded.

Resort Pools

If you’re staying at our Palm Cove apartments, the resort features a large lagoon-style pool, a separate children’s pool, and a hot spa — all within the complex. For many families, the pool becomes the centrepiece of the holiday. Bring pool toys and plan for at least a few hours there each day.

Great Barrier Reef Day Trip

A reef day trip is the highlight of any Far North Queensland family holiday. Children from around age 5 can snorkel with a life jacket and guidance from crew. Most operators have glass-bottom boat sections for younger children or those who prefer not to get in the water. The reef is genuinely extraordinary — turtles, reef fish, and coral gardens that children remember for life.

Wildlife Experiences

Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures (15 min north of Palm Cove) is a standout family attraction — crocodile shows, koala encounters, cassowaries, and native wildlife in a natural wetland setting.

Rainforest Adventures

The Skyrail Rainforest Cableway and Kuranda Scenic Railway are iconic experiences that children love. The cableway glides over the rainforest canopy with stunning views; the train winds through mountain tunnels and waterfalls. Combine both for a full day out — take the train up, the cableway back (or vice versa). Kuranda village has markets, butterfly sanctuary, and a birdworld.

Cairns Esplanade Lagoon

A 25-minute drive south, the Cairns Esplanade Lagoon is a free public saltwater swimming lagoon right on the waterfront. It’s enormous, shallow, and perfectly safe — a great half-day option, especially combined with the Cairns markets or a visit to the city centre.

Practical Tips for Families

Palm Cove’s esplanade is completely flat and pram-friendly. Most restaurants are relaxed and welcoming to families — dining with children is easy. Palms Supermarket is a 2-minute walk and covers the basics; there’s also a Coles about a 4-minute drive away for a bigger shop. A car is useful but not essential for the first day or two if you’re happy to stay local.
